Co-Author: Intersectional Social Data

Kaliya Young · October 24, 2019 ·

I co-authored this paper with Glen Weyl and Lucas Geiger.
Intersectional Social Data

In our previous three-part series, we motivated the case for decentralized identity systems, and exposed some of the current frameworks for implementing digital identity systems. In this piece we expose some of our collective research in Decentralized Identifiers (DID) and identity for emergent social structures. Finally we suggest further avenues of investigation and outcomes of the public goods of the internet post decentralized identity.

Presentation: to SWIFT Innotribe (the world’s bankers)

Kaliya Young · September 25, 2019 ·

In September of 2019 I was invited to present to the world’s bankers at the conference run by the co-op at the center of the world’s banking system, SWIFT. The stage is fantastic 24m x 4m high. You can see SSI outlined in large details. I also cover big topics like the meaning of the word trust. Enjoy!

Acclaimed expert Kaliya Young, widely known as ‘Identity Woman’, explores the concept of self-sovereign identity (SSI) on the Innotribe stage.

Kaliya Young (aka Identity Woman) has been working on digital identities for the past 15 years including helping facilitate the twice-a-year Internet Identity Workshop. These workshops lead to the Rebooting the Web of Trust workshops and the Decentralized Identity Foundation, which created a W3C specification on Decentralized Identifiers.

I had a chance to catch up with Young at the Decentralized Web Summit where we talk about the Decentralized Identifiers standards and the history of self-sovereign identity.

I’m just putting it out here on this blog that I talked the data raindrop and how it works at IIW in the session about Sidewalk Labs.

I look forward to developing it with developers who think its cool. I will outline it further soon.

They are ATTRIBUTES IBM – attributes!~!~!

Kaliya Young · April 5, 2017 ·

So.. I’m watching this fine video by IBM about its “self-sovereign” identity document  solution that magically the drivers licence authority can “erase” with a click of the button from them (yes the could if need to be able to revoke your privilege to drive but its an ID you use for many other things besides that). See that in this video.
The next video just got me hopping – they are calling all the bits of information about you on the drivers licence “traits” rather than the industry norm for those types of things “attributes”.  Anyways maybe this is for public consumption.  Link to video. And for a bouns…”my traits don’t makeup who I am”. (Oh but the ISO standards they are following often take this perspective).
I think this first video listed may be the first case I have seen of the white-washing of the term self-sovereign Identity.
Perhaps it was and is naive to believe that we will be able to build systems that really empower consumers and take advantage of the things that bits can do that paper documents can’t. The grooves of thinking about how things will need to be are shaped by the people and institutions that have been thinking about this and driving this since the era when they created passports that were a new and novel thing in the 1920s.  they are driven by the institutions that seek to control us via our identities.
They don’t have a problem using the term “cryptoblob” – which might be a good term of art.
Dave Barns is working on this a lot and it is very interesting that he and his group have not found IIW yet. It just shows that the landscape is ripe for more connecting.  Hopefully they can join us in May or October.

Starting 2017

Kaliya Young · January 2, 2017 ·

I haven’t been blogging much 🙁
Lots has happened this past few years. So much stuff and so much that I haven’t really talked about publically. I will get to that in time. I have been sharing in other mediums a little bit on twitter and mailing lists. It will all come out in good time.
It has made me think a lot about trust, allies, “reputation” or the failure of people who actually espouse it as a thing to use to regulate social systems to actually use it to do so. Also about the systemic level of abuse that women experience in life and in professional realms.
I’m back though. Living in a good place. Feeling strong and healthy. I have just spent the holidays working on a report I’m really proud of. Hopefully it will be made public, that will also be in good time….
She’s Geeky is happening! We have formed a new core team with myself, Estee Solomon-Gray and Shannon Casey. We are having a special edition one day event on January 28th. Its a week after the inauguration and  we are considering the question What are we doing as women of Technology and STEAM at this time.  We have three themes – Regroup, Reenergize, Redirect.
I’m on the board of Patient Privacy Rights – lead by Deb Peel. The organization is supporting a new book coming out by Adam Tanner, Our Bodies, Our Data: How Companies Make Billions Selling our Medical Records.
January 9th is the book launch in Austin.

Grace Hopper Celebration and Presentation – Ethical Market Models.

Kaliya Young · November 9, 2015 · Leave a Comment

In mid-October I had the opportunity to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing for the first time.
Here is a link to the paper that I presented – MarketModels-GHC Here are the slides

Ethical Market Models in the Personal Data Ecosystem
I also had the pleasure of working on a Birds of a Feather Session with Roshi from Google – she works on their identity team and was the one who asked me work on the session with her along with encouraging me submit a proposal for a lighting talk.
We had a great discussion about the internet of things and considering various ideas about what internet of things things…we might invent and how we might identify ourselves to them.
The conference is really a giant job fair for undergaduate women CS majors. There is not a lot there for mid-career women, all of the ones I spoke to felt this way.  I realize if I was a young woman….at a CS department where most everyone is a man.  Attending this event would make me feel like the whole world opened up…and anything was possible.
The event made me more committed to putting energy into helping She’s Geeky expand and serve more cities and more women and particularly those who are at high risk of leaving the industry – those who have been in the industry for around 10 years.

I'm Quoted in Guardian Article re: Ellen Pao

Kaliya Young · July 16, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday a reporter called me up and asked me for comment on Ellen Pao. I said “What did you expect?” It became the headline! – I continued “Ellen was at the center of a high-profile sexual discrimination suit versus a major VC firm and she was put in charge of the teenage boy section of the internet. What did you expect was going to happen? It was inevitable that they would turn on her,”
You can read the whole article here – I wasn’t the only one unsurprised by what happened. 🙂

#mynameis my statement for the virtual press kit

Kaliya Young · June 1, 2015 · Leave a Comment

I just wrote this up for the virtual press kit for the #mynameis protest.

With its real name / authentic name policy Facebook is violating the rights and dignity of thousands if not millions. Individuals of all stripes have authentic names that are not found on any of their legal paperwork.  In common law countries we have the right to define our own name and there rights need to be respected online.
Identity is contextual. That is the same person may use different names authentically in different social contexts – within the Drag Queen and LGBT community – one name Lil Hot Mess for example and in a professional day job a completely different name – more likely one on formal legal paperwork but not necessarily.  These different contexts have their own contextual authenticity.
Google+ when it began several years ago also had a real name or what they called common name policy and instead users send in government issued ID via e-mail.  Many resisted these policies and eventually years later they changed their policies.   The movement around their policies was called the #Nymwars and several people organized to found the Nym Rights group. We fully support the #MyNameIs campaign and its efforts.
The freedom to choose our own names is the digital civil rights issue of our time. Without the freedom to choose our own name(s) online and the right associated with that choose our digital identities subject to termination for arbitrary reasons.  In the physical world – if our body is assaulted, or killed whoever does will suffer consequences. We must struggle for our rights in the digital world and the freedom to choose our own names – without these rights and freedoms our right to express ourselves – to speak up in a free society will be severely weakened.
