I think I need a new Google product to drop into beta. That would be, let’s see, Google Data Privacy. GDP would allow me to review all of the information that Google retains on me across all services, from all devices, and from all sources. GDP would allow me to determine the maximum data retention period for each of my services. GDP would allow me to selectively opt out of cross-service data mining & correlation, even if it reduced the quality of the services I receive. GDP would allow me to correct any inaccurate data in my profile. And GDP would log and alert me when my data was queried by other services.
I want my Google Data Privacy.
Google is extending and integrating DodgeBall with its other services. Chris Mesina writes about it. Why should people be forced into integrating their accounts because one of the big silo’s buys them. People really don’t want to do that. Perhaps their DodgeBall persona is really different then their one for sharing spreadsheets with work colleagues. I think consumers are going to demand more choice in how they manage their online selves (personas) and that the companies that respond well will be rewarded in the market.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you, but now when you try to log into your favorite neighborhood spyware, you’ll be greeted by a prompt to login with either your old skool Dodgeball account credentials or your Gauth account (the one that you use for Docs, Gmail, Gcal, Orkut, or other Google Services like YouTube (whoops — did I just say YouTube?).
Should you choose to login with your Dodgeball account, you’ll then be asked what your Gauth account is… again… or to create a new one. I chose to eff it and just merge my accounts (hoping that there’s an export of my checkins to Google Earth). Now I can manage Dodgeball from Google (note the last service):
My plea for help got some responses and some how by clearing the cache and restarting my computer I was once again able to access Gmail.
Thanks for your help!
I have no idea what is going on.
I have not been able for the past 2 days get to gmail. That is right. I put in the URL http://mail.google.com and it just sits there spinning….basically forever – 10+min. Never going to the site…never saying 404. I don’t get it. I asked someone yesturday if there were able to get there. They said they had checked there account lately. I am totally mystified. I need to get mailings out about the OpenID thing on Thursday but I can’t get to my account. It is very frustrating. If anyone knows what is going on and can tell me I would be appreciative. (To comment you actually need to ‘login’ which is hard to find on my blog it is up in the righthand corner.)
