I started She’s Geeky in 2007 (see our old site). Over the next decade we held 17 unconferences — open, participant-driven gatherings where women in tech set the agenda themselves. No pre-selected panels. No keynotes. Just a room full of smart women deciding together what to talk about.
What made She’s Geeky special wasn’t just the format. It was the fact that we became a neutral space where all the different “women in tech” communities could actually find each other.
There are a lot of women-in-tech organizations. They have very different vibes, very different interests, very different cultures. Some are deeply technical. Some focus on policy. Some center founders, some center researchers, some center women of color, some center career development. They don’t naturally overlap — they each have their own events, their own networks, their own rhythms.
She’s Geeky gave all of these groups a place to connect together. Not under any one organization’s banner. Not with anyone else’s agenda. Just a shared space where women across all these different communities could be in the room with each other, discover what they had in common, and build relationships that didn’t exist before.
That was beautiful. And it is something that is needed more then ever in this time of AI.
Why Now
AI is the defining technology of this moment. The decisions being made right now — about how AI agents work, who they serve, what values get built in, who gets a seat at the table — will shape everything that comes after.
Women are doing extraordinary work in AI. Building companies, leading research, setting policy, raising ethical questions the industry doesn’t want to hear. But the spaces where AI’s future is being debated are overwhelmingly not designed for the kind of honest, horizontal conversation that moves things forward.
That’s exactly the problem She’s Geeky was built to solve.
She’s Geeky: AI Edition — May 15, 2026
We are bringing She’s Geeky back as a one-day unconference focused on women in tech and AI, on May 15 in San Francisco. We have a great group of conveners – these are like our “speakers” because we co-create our agenda using Open Space Technology. Participants arrive and create the agenda together that morning. Anyone can propose a session. The conversations that need to happen, happen — because the people in the room decide what matters to them the day of the event.
